The rise of a new destination in Vietnam northern mountains

2

We told you in a previous post about the accessibility of Lao Cai and Sapa made easier and faster with the completion of the new highway between Hanoi and Lao Cai. Well, this is not the only new road to power a change in the North Vietnam tourism map; and Sapa will not be the only spot to benefit from it. This is the story of 2 regions that were meant to go together. Explanations.

First we have the Eastern part of Lao Cai province. Bac Ha and its surroundings, the Chay river, the markets from Coc Ly to Can Cau, a credible alternative to Sapa for any traveler ready to trade the majestic valleys below Sapa for some quieter hiking trails.

Then we have the Western part of Ha Giang province. It used to be quite secluded and offering a very limited access. This region was always cornered in the shadow of its Eastern sister and the legendary pair Dong Van - Meo Vac. But the grandeur of its scenery definitely shows the Ha Giang parentage; a mix of deep valleys and high forested passes.

Those two complementary regions could not be associated because of a 20-kilometer cut with no proper road for a car to drive on. If Bac Ha and its surroundings were still receiving a honorable amount of visitors, the Ha Giang part with Xin Man and Hoang Su Phi suffered very much their remoteness and lack of access.

And the light finally came on. The road linking Bac Ha to Xin Man was completed few months ago. Other roads connecting Bac Ha to Nghia Do (at its South) and Xin Man to Yen Binh (also at its South) have been completed or improved. And from two separated and different regions rose a new united travel destination that is certainly the near future of mountain tourism in North Vietnam. Top-notch mountain trekking grounds can now be associated in memorable journeys looping around with green valleys, colorful markets and friendly homestays.

You’ll see below a map to illustrate all of this. And do not hesitate to contact us if you’d like to go explore this wonderful area.
