Day 4 Angkor temples with sunset cocktails

Meal: breakfast | Accommodation: in Siem Reap

We'll rise early to visit Angkor Wat, the largest religious building in the world. Built-in the 12th century by King Suryavarman II, it symbolizes Khmer pride and strength. After a picnic breakfast, we'll explore the temple, starting with its intricate bas-reliefs depicting Hindu mythology and the glory of the Khmer empire. Then we'll climb to the upper levels, where the steep steps lead to the sacred heart of Angkor Wat, a harmonious blend of spirituality and symmetry.

We will head after to the 'Indiana Jones' temple of Ta Prohm. This temple has been abandoned to the elements, as a reminder that while empires rise and fall, the riotous power of nature marches on, oblivious to the dramas of human history.

Our journey continues to Angkor Thom, an immense walled city built by King Jayavarman VII. We'll be amazed by its grandeur, beginning with the elaborate causeway and bridge depicting a mythical tug of war. Along the way, we'll explore the Terrace of the Leper King, the Terrace of Elephants, and the beautifully renovated Baphuon temple.

Finally, we'll reach the Bayon temple, located at the center of Angkor Thom. Its 54 towers feature the four faces of Avalokiteshvara, representing the king's ego and compassion. Feel free to ask our guide questions to understand the entirety of the Angkor Era as our journey comes to a close.

After visiting the temple, we finished our day at Sala Kdei Khmer house nearby Sra Srong to enjoy sunset cocktails and our very own intimate Angkor retreat.

Overnight in Siem Reap

Day 5 Bantey Srei temple and local life. Landmine Museum. Phare circus

Meal: breakfast, lunch | Accommodation: in Siem Reap

We depart Siem Reap for the local village of Preah Dak where we sample a local specialty, nam ben chuk rice noodles. We then stop at a traditional sugar palm village to learn about the production of palm sugar and palm wine. Nearby is the Cambodia Landmine Museum, a flagship center promoting mine awareness and education where we learn more about the scourge of landmines and the shadow they cast over rural communities in Cambodia.

We then head to Banteay Srei, Angkor’s ultimate art gallery. This petite pink temple is the jewel in the crown of Angkor-era sculpture. The elaborate carvings here are the finest found in Cambodia and the name translates as ‘Fortress of the Women’, thanks to the intricate detail here, considered too fine for the hands of a man.

In the evening we’ll enjoy the Phare circus show. This unique circus combines acrobatics, theater, music, and storytelling to create a captivating cultural experience. The talented performers, trained by Phare Ponleu Selpak, showcase traditional Cambodian arts with a modern twist. The show's high energy, spectacular acts, and engaging storytelling keep audiences enthralled.
