The Marvels of Southern Laos
Customize a tour

A trip “just” about exploration, full of beauty and the natural wonders that this scarred part of the country features. You will feel like you are away from the crowds in almost every place you visit. Even in the more touristy places like 4000 Islands we can still find quiet corners and accommodation to be called your own private paradise.

  • The ruins of Wat Phou, an awe-inspiring Khmer Hindu temple complex.
  • Discover the rural life around the 4000 Islands by local boat.
  • Chances to see the rare freshwater dolphins.
  • The spectacular Khone Phapheng Falls, one of the largest and most powerful waterfalls in Southeast Asia.
Arrival in Pakse – Bolaven Plateau

Day 1 Arrival in Pakse – Bolaven Plateau

Meals: nit included | Accommodation: Tad Lo Lodge, Standard Room (Tad Lo)

Today you will be taken by road east into the Bolaven Plateau. The Bolaven Plateau is known for its cooler temperature, being located high above the Mekong Valley. Our first stop is to visit Houey Ten, a village specialized in knifemaking. A tea and coffee plantation and the Tad Fan Waterfall (a picturesque twin chute waterfall) will be our next stops en route to Tha Teng Market, a colourful ethnic food market.

Next we explore a couple of fascinating villages, Ban Bong Neua, an Alak village that boasts a sacrificial altar, and Ban Kokphung, a Katu village where they keep coffins under their houses.  We arrive at the beautiful Tadlo Waterfall in the afternoon, where you have the rest of the day at leisure.

Tad Lo – Wat Phou

Day 2 Tad Lo – Wat Phou

Meals: breakfast | Accommodation: Pon Arena, Deluxe room (Don Khong)

After breakfast we head out of the plateau, stopping first at the attractive Paxuam Waterfall. We then drive to Champassak and onto Wat Phou, an ancient Khmer religious complex dating back to the 10th Century.  This dramatically sited temple is one of the highlights of any trip to Laos.

In the late afternoon you will drive to Don Khong, the largest of the Mekong Islands, known locally as ‘Siphandon’, literally ‘4000 Islands’.  Don Khong itself is a great place to relax and take in the traditional Lao rural life.  We arrive on Khong Island via ferry by the early evening.

Khong – 4000 Islands

Day 3 Khong – 4000 Islands

Meals: breakfast | Accommodation: Residence Sisouk, Superior Room (Pakse)

Following breakfast we board a local private boat for a boat tour of the 4000 Islands. We reach the picturesque island of Don Khone and explore the island by bicycle, tracing the route of an old abandoned railway and admiring some of the old French Colonial buildings, and the beautiful Liphi Waterfall.

We then return to our boat and head back to the mainland, visiting the spectacular Khone Phapheng Falls, one of the largest and most powerful waterfalls in Southeast Asia.  From here we take a boat onto the Mekong to one of the few places in the world where it is possible to see freshwater dolphins. They reside in deep pools near the Cambodia border, and if you are lucky you may catch a glimpse of them.  We then return to Pakse by car, arriving there by the evening.

Note: An overnight in 4000 Island can also be arranged, especially if you plan to cross the border to Cambodia, where we would also be glad to assist you.
